How To Make CBD Bath Bombs: Everything You Need To Know

Before we get too deep into how to make CBD oil bath bombs, let’s talk a little bit about some of the key ingredients they contain. While the ingredients themselves are simple, there’s a science behind their combination.

Simply put, they all work together to create the soothing, fizzy bath bombs we’ve all come to know and love.

DIY CBD Bath Bomb Key Ingredients

Sodium Bicarbonate and Citric Acid

Most bath bombs, regardless of whether or not they contain CBD, are made with two primary ingredients: sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda) and citric acid.

What makes these two particular ingredients so special?

They’re the foundation for the famous bath bomb fizz and provide a solid base for all the other soothing ingredients that are added to the bath bomb itself.

It’s baking soda and citric acid that creates the fizzy phenomenon that makes bath bombs so appealing.

When they’re dropped into warm bath water and create that famed fizz, the bath bomb begins to break apart, which ultimately releases all the other bath bomb ingredients into the tub. Once extra ingredients that were added to the bath bomb begin to dissolve, they immediately start working their magic on the skin and senses.

Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)

In case you weren’t aware, sodium bicarbonate is known to contain some serious benefits for the skin. Not only is it known to tighten pores and eliminate dead skin cells, but it’s also great for eliminating unwanted body odor and more. Who knew good old-fashioned baking soda was so advantageous when it comes to beauty?

Citric Acid

Citric acid is another blessing for beautiful skin. Did you know that citric acid is so beneficial for skin that it’s a common ingredient found in many beauty products and cosmetics produced around the world? True story. This natural exfoliant is packed with antioxidants, can dramatically decrease pore size, and has shown to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Cornstarch

When you learn how to make CBD bath bombs, you’ll find most recipes contain cornstarch. What exactly does cornstarch add to the recipe itself? Honestly, cornstarch is added to bath bomb recipes for only one reason. It helps slow down the reaction time of the other ingredients. It works by binding to the citric acid and baking soda and helps to slow down the rate at which they dissolve when added to a warm bath.

By adding cornstarch to your CBD bath bomb recipe, your fizz factor could last 3-4 minutes instead of just a few seconds.

Epsom Salts

Epsom salts are extremely soothing to the skin. In warm water, they dissolve to create magnesium and sulfate, which can help relax muscles and loosen up sore joints.

Coconut Oil

When learning how to make CBD bath bombs, you’ll notice another ingredient we’ve added to the mix is coconut oil. It’s a staple in countless natural beauty products for a good reason. It’s amazing for the skin.

Coconut oil is a huge advantage for moisturizing dry skin, does an outstanding job at restoring and repairing the skin’s barrier function, and is a well-known antioxidant. It’s believed to work so well for skin hydration because it keeps skin moisturized by decreasing evaporation.

Essential Oils

You’ll also find essential oils are an essential ingredient when learning how to make CBD bath bombs. With different essential oils each containing their own therapeutic properties, here’s where you can begin to get creative.

When we first learned how to make CBD bath bombs, the lavender essential oil was our go-to. Not only is lavender well-regarded for relieving stress and tension, but it’s also said to be excellent for promoting a good night’s sleep. Seeing as most people take a soothing bath before bed, lavender can be a great way to promote relaxation and prepare the body for sleep.

During cold and flu season, we might whip up some bath bombs with eucalyptus, lemon, tea tree, and oregano, all of which are known for their immune-boosting properties

If you’re more of a morning bath person and are looking for a bit of an energy boost in your bath bomb, you might want to consider mood-boosting essential oils such as orange, lemon, lime, or grapefruit. Citrus essential oils are an awesome way to naturally jumpstart your day. Add a bit of peppermint essential oil into the mix for good measure, as it’s shown to be helpful for preventing fatigue

Food Coloring

Food coloring is a completely optional ingredient when you’re learning how to make CBD bath bombs. If you choose not to use food coloring, expect your bath bombs to be a soft white hue. If you want to go for a pop of color, feel free to add a few drops of your desired food coloring color of choice.

Now that you understand why each ingredient is added when learning how to make CBD bath bombs, it’s time to have some fun.

In the following, you’ll find an easy recipe to make your own CBD bath bombs like a pro.

Check it out.

CBD Bath Bomb Recipe

Yields approximately 10 bath bombs each containing 25mg CBD. Keep in mind the exact count and amount of CBD per bath bomb will vary depending on the size mold being used.

Steps to make cbd bath bombs

Step 1

Combine baking soda, citric acid, Epsom salts and cornstarch in medium bowl. Stir until thoroughly combined.

Step 2

Combine melted coconut oil, water, and CBD oil tincture in a large bowl.

If you’ve decided to use food coloring for color, you’ll also add this now.

Mix well. You can also combine these wet ingredients into a jar with a tight-fitting lid and shake it vigorously for a couple of minutes and then pour into a large bowl once combined.

Step 3

Once you’ve combined both dry and wet ingredients, begin to slowly add dry mixture to wet mixture, just a little bit at a time, stirring constantly.

When we say mix slow, we mean mix slow. Doing so will ensure your bath bomb ingredients don’t begin fizzing before you’re finished making them. If you pour too quickly, you risk the citric acid reacting with the wet ingredients.

Once all ingredients are combined, you should end up with a mixture that is somewhat like the consistency of wet sand.

step 4

Next, use your hands to form the mixture into your silicone molds. You’ll want to do this immediately after mixing so the mixture doesn’t begin to dry out. Make sure that you press your mixture firmly into your molds.

Step 5

Allow your bath bombs to dry completely before popping them out of the mold. We typically let our CBD bath bombs dry for at least 1-2 hours to be safe before we remove them from the molds, but they’re typically ready to be removed from the mold in as little as 30 minutes. Allow drying for 24 hours on a piece of parchment paper or cookie sheet before using them or wrapping them up as a gift.

step 6

Store unused CBD bath bombs wrapped in cellophane in a cool, dry place.

Measuring CBD Content

It can become confusing trying to figure out how much CBD you’ll need to add to your mixture to get the desired amount of CBD you want in each separate bath bomb.

Keep in mind that CBD is typically measured in milligrams. For this recipe, we used 250mg of CBD oil tincture for approximately 10 bath bombs. This results in each bath bomb containing 25mg CBD.

If you’re looking for stronger therapeutic relief, you might consider using more CBD. If you’re interested in moderate pain relief, for example, you might think about making each bath bomb contain 50mg CBD. If this is the case, you would need to use 500mg of CBD oil tincture in your recipe.

For even stronger relief, you might want to have each CBD bath bomb contain 100mg of CBD. To make this recipe for 100mg CBD bath bombs, you would need to use 1000mg of CBD oil tincture in your recipe.
